Tartan Men’s Golf Receives NCAA Bid

(INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's golf team has been selected to compete in the 2019 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships. The championships will be held May 14-17 at the Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Kentucky, on the Champion Trace Course and the Keene Run Golf Course. Transylvania University will be hosting the four-day event.

The appearance by the Tartans at the championships marks the program's third trip, as the 2009 team finished 22nd and the 2017 team ended play 31st at the national event.

A total of 216 participants will compete at the 2019 championships. Thirty-two conferences were awarded automatic qualification for the championships. Three teams were selected from Pool B, which consists of independent institutions, and institutions that are members of conferences that do not meet the requirements for automatic qualification. The final seven berths were reserved for Pool C, which are institutions from automatic-qualifying conferences that are not the conference champion and any remaining Pool B teams. The top six individuals are selected from the remaining players who have not qualified with a team.

The Tartans, along with University Athletic Association (UAA) counterpart Emory University, and Southwestern University received the three Pool B bids.

The Tartans currently rank ninth nationally in the latest Division III Golfstat rankings and our led by sophomore Jason Li (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy). Li is currently ranked sixth nationally as an individual with a scoring average of 72.50 through 21 rounds played.

Play begins on Tuesday, May 14 with round two to follow on Wednesday, May 15. Following 36 holes of play, the field will be cut to the top 18 teams and top six individuals. The final 18 teams will vie for the 2019 national championship with round three being played Thursday, May 16 and the fourth and final round on Friday, May 17.
