Tartans Finish in Fourth at The Savannah Invitational

(SAVANNAH, Ga.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's golf team, ranked eighth nationally, completed play of the second round and competed in the third and final round of The Savannah Invitational hosted by Berry College on Tuesday and placed fourth in the 19-team field. The 54-hole event is being played at The Club at Savannah Harbor Golf Course which is a par 71, 6,715-yard course.

The Tartans completed the final two holes of round two Tuesday morning after play was stopped Monday due to darkness. The Cardinal and Gray ended round two with a 292 and paired that with their opening round score of 289 for a 581, which tied them for third heading into the final round of play. In the third round, the Tartans carded a 284 for a 54-hole score of 865 (289-292-284) to place fourth. The 865 is the third lowest 54-hole team tournament total in program history.

Senior William Knauth (Williamsport, Pa. / Williamsport Area) shot a two-under par 69 to lead the Tartans in the final round and over the invitational. The senior carded a 54-hole score of 213 (73-71-69) and tied for ninth individually in a field of 95 golfers.

Freshman Justin Chan (London, United Kingdom) ended the second round with a collegiate-low of one-under par 70 and then followed with a one-over par 72 in round three for a 54-hole score of 216 (74-70-72). Senior Joshua Lim (San Francisco, Calif. / Lowell) shot a two-over par 73 Tuesday and a 218 (68-77-73) total.

Senior Jason Folker (Lake Forest, Ill. / Lake Forest) along with sophomore Brian Xu (San Diego, Calif. / Torrey Pines) turned in their best round of the invitational on Tuesday. Folker shot even par 71 to end with a 219 (74-74-71) while Xu carded a collegiate-low round of one-over par 72 to end with a 224 (74-78-72).

Carnegie Mellon had two individuals compete on Tuesday at the Savannah Quarters Country Club, as senior Henry Scavone (Birmingham, Mich./Birmingham Seaholm) shot a 36-hole score of 157 (79-78) and sophomore Stephen Dai (Bellevue, Wash. / Lakeside School) carded a 158 (76-82).

The Tartans will be back on the links Saturday, March 12, when they compete at the University Athletic Association Championships. The two-day match play event is hosted by Washington University in St. Louis at Hammock Beach Resort on the Conservatory Course in Palm Coast, Florida.
