Tartans Make Cut at 2023 NCAA Championship; Tied for Third

(NICHOLASVILLE, Ky.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's golf team competed in the second round of the 2023 NCAA Division III Championships on Wednesday in Nicholasville, Kentucky. The Tartans carded a three-under par 285 on the Keene Run Course at the Keene Trace Golf Club and have a 36-hole score of 577 (292-285) which places them tied for third in a field of 43 teams and advances them to rounds three and four of the championship. Following play on Wednesday, the field was cut to the top 18 teams and the top six individuals not on one of those teams.

How it Happened:

  • Graduate student Henry Scavone carded a five-under par 67 on Wednesday. He currently is tied atop the individual leader board with a four-under 140 (73-67) through the first two rounds in a field of 221 golfers.
  • Sitting two strokes off the lead is sophomore Justin Chan with a 142 (72-70) following his round of two-under par 70.
  • The other three Cardinal and gray golfers, junior Brian Xu and freshman David Zhang and freshman Andrew Wang all entered the clubhouse on Wednesday with rounds of two-over par 74.
  •  Zhang has a 36-hole score of 147 (73-74), Xu a 148 (74-74) and Wang a 149 (75-74).
