Sarett's Early Goal Stands as No. 18 Tartans Win 1-0

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - Senior Matt Sarett's (Huntersville, N.C./Cannon) goal in the 17th minute of the game stood up for the No. 18 Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team, as it dominated the stat sheet and defeated the University of Mount Union 1-0 on Saturday, August 31 in the final game of the DoubleTree Invitational.

Senior Mike Ferraco (Penn Hills, Pa./Penn Hills) had a shot denied by Mount Union keeper Alex Bable 12:30 into the game, as senior Ben Bryant (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills) sent a diagonal cross to the far post that Ferraco put right on net within two yards that Bable rejected at the post.

Four minutes later, Bryant had a throw-in he sent towards senior Max Tassano (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Lower Merion) in the Tartans' offensive third of the field. Tassano flicked it with his head off one bounce toward central midfield where Sarett shielded his defender, took two touches forward and lasered a shot to the left upper 90 for the score.

Six minutes into the second period, Mount Union's Kevin Blackley struck a shot that met the crossbar and bounced down but not over the goal line. The rebound was then headed by Coty Lipply but junior keeper Jacob Rice (Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) was there to collect it.

The Tartans had a few more chances after the 67th minute, as senior Chris Wysocki (Newtown, Pa./Germantown Academy) took four shots, including three on goal.

In the last minute, Mount Union threatened to equalize when it got forward on a counter attack, but the Tartans' defense recovered and denied Tom Beck a shot at goal.

Rice earned his first win of the season while recording three saves, including a tip over the crossbar in the 44th minute off a free kick destined to score by Eric Ehrenberg.

The Tartans will be in action next on Saturday, September 7 at Dickinson College at 1:00 p.m.
