Tartans Rally, Then Fall in OT at Geneva

(BEAVER FALLS, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team traveled to Geneva College for a midweek contest, tying the game late but falling late in overtime, as the Golden Tornadoes (4-0-1) pulled out a 3-2 win over the Tartans (2-3).

The Tartans held the majority of the possession and had a six to three shot advantage in the first period while taking eight corner kicks to the Golden Tornadoes one, but couldn't get a shot past Bryan Butler until late in the second half.

Geneva struck first with 53:22 gone by when Alexander Rosenbaum finished a pass from Gib McCracken who crossed in a through ball by Jeremy Troutman. Twenty-five seconds later, Josh Brenize added to the score for Geneva when he got a shot by Tartans senior keeper Jacob Rice (Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) off an assist by Clayton Cox.

The Tartans didn't surrender and fought their way back, eventually pulling within one when junior Connor Webb (Dallas, Texas/J.J. Pearce) scored his second goal of the season on break away in the 80th minute.

With seven seconds to play, senior Brandon Peck (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) put in the equalizer when he finished off a pass headed forward by Webb, sending the game to overtime.

The Tartans had three opportunities deep in the Geneva territory with corner kicks in overtime but weren't able to get a shot off. The Golden Tornadoes took advantage of the Tartans missed opportunities and scored the winner with 13 seconds to play in overtime with Rosenbaum finished a shot from outside the six-yard box to the low right corner.

Rice made three saves for the game while Butler made five for the Golden Tornadoes.

The Tartans will return to the field on Saturday, September 13 when they host Allegheny College at 1:00 p.m.
