Tartans Bench Keys 3-0 Win Against Allegheny

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Freshman Ryan Stinebaugh (Houston, Texas/Strake Jesuit College Prep) scored a goal and impacted another other as the Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team defeated Allegheny College 3-0 on Saturday, September 13 to move to 3-3 on the year.

In the 28th minute, junior Connor Webb (Dallas, Texas/J.J. Pearce) had a shot go off the post but the Tartans were able to break the 0-0 game when they earned a free kick deep in Allegheny territory in the 40th minute. The ensuing free kick taken by sophomore Devin Keane (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) was sent across the goal mouth to the far post. Stinebaugh was in the area and pressured the defense who miscleared the ball and deflected backwards past his keeper for the own goal and the Tartans 1-0 lead.

Not even two minutes into the second half, Webb and Stinebaugh were inside the Allegheny 18-yard box with Webb taking a shot saved by Allegheny keeper Jake Pugliese that was not secured. Stinebaugh calmly finished off the rebound for his first career goal.

"We wanted to come out strong in the second half and told the guys the first 10 minutes was important to get off to a good start," head coach Brandon Bowman said. "We wanted to push and get another goal and luckily we did. Ryan had a nice finish after Connor's initial shot was saved."

Junior keeper Eric Bykowsky (Columbia, S.C./Irmo) made two diving saves in the second half to keep the Gators off the scoreline and Webb added to the score in the 86th minute to put the game in the books for the Tartans. Webb's third goal of the season came after senior Jakob Rohwer (Southborough, Mass./Phillips Academy Andover) played a ball forward that Webb touched around a defender, then the keeper and put past another defender for the score.

"It's great to see the team pull out a win when we didn't play our best," Bowman said. "To fight through the day when you're not playing your best shows the maturity level of our guys is increasing and it's exciting to see."

"Coming into the game one of the key points was that we were going to need strong bench play," Bowman continued. "This was our fourth game in seven days and we knew the bench was going to be important and they came out strong and that's what helped us pull out the victory."

The Tartans will return to the field on Wednesday, September 17 at 7:00 p.m. when they host Washington and Jefferson College.
