Tartans Top Presidents 2-1 at Home

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team picked up its second straight win with a 2-1 victory over visiting Washington & Jefferson College on Wednesday, September 17. The Tartans improve to 4-3 on the season while the Presidents fall to 2-4.

The Tartans took advantage of their movement up field when junior Dimitrije Slavkovic (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) finished off the first shot attempt of the game with just 4:50 gone by. As play moved from the center of the field, sophomore Devin Keane (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) touched a ball wide to senior Colin Shaffer (Huntington Beach, Calif./St. Margaret's Episcopal School) who one touched a cross to the box. Slavkovic chested the ball down and struck it with his right foot past the Presidents' keeper for the score.

Both teams had opportunities to add to the score in the first half but the keepers made the stops as Tartan senior keeper Jacob Rice (Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) made three saves on shots from distance and Jon Best made saves on shots by Shaffer, sophomore Tristan Lockwood (Victor, N.Y./Victor) and freshman Ryan Stinebaugh (Houston, Texas/Strake Jesuit College Prep).

In the 58th minute, junior Connor Webb (Dallas, Texas/J.J. Pearce) scored for the fourth time this season when he slipped behind a defender and calmly finished off a headed pass forward by freshman Jimmy Jameson (Fairfax, Va./Oakton). Jameson headed the ball from the right corner of the 18-yard box after receiving a crossing pass from Stinebaugh.

Two minutes later, the Presidents earned a free kick and on the ensuing kick a foul in the box by a Tartan defender gave the visitors a penalty kick which James Calvert put past Rice to cut the deficit in half.

The final 30 minutes were played primarily in the Presidents' defensive third as the Tartans got off four shots including two more on goal that were saved by Jon Best.

For the match, Rice finished with three saves earning his second win of the year.

The Tartans will return to action on Saturday, September 20 when they travel to Bethany College for a 1:30 p.m. start.
