Late Rally by Rochester Downs Tartans 2-1

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team fell 2-1 in University Athletic Association (UAA) action on Sunday, November 2 to the University of Rochester in a tough battle. The Tartans are now 8-5-2 on the year and 2-2-2 in the UAA as the Yellowjackets are 8-5-3 and 2-3-1.

Senior keeper Jacob Rice (Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) stopped four shots in the first period as the score was knotted at 0-0 for the half.

In the 70th minute, the Tartans pressed forward and sophomore Tristan Lockwood (Victor, N.Y./Victor) dribbled toward the goal causing the keeper to come off his line as a defender was also on Lockwood's heals. Lockwood was able to tip a pass out wide where freshman Ryan Stinebaugh (Houston, Texas/Strake Jesuit College Prep) was in empty space. Stinebaugh calmly shot the ball to the open net for the Tartans' 1-0 advantage and his second goal of the season.

Rice made a save in the early part of the 75th minute before junior Ben Alderoty (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven Regional) had a shot go just high and an attempt by sophomore Devin Keane (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) was saved by Rochester's Michael Shatkin in goal.

In th 84th minute, the Yellowjackets earned a free kick from 40 yards out. Jeffrey Fafinski sent the free kick toward the goal where Rice punched it out. The free ball was then chested down by Ben Swanger to Sean Daly who rocked a shot to the open net for the equalizer.

Two minutes later, the Yellowjackets had another free kick from nearly the same location. Fafinski sent this kick to the back post where Ben Keeton rose above the Tartan defense and headed the ball to the opposite post past the outstretched arms of Rice for the 2-1 lead.

Shatkin made a save for the Yellowjackets in the 89th minute off a shot by Keane to hold up the 2-1 win for the visiting team.

The Tartans will next play host to No. 24 Emory University (13-3-1, 3-3) in the final regular season game for both schools on Saturday, November 8 at 12:00 p.m.
