Tartans Fall in UAA Opener, 4-2, to No. 8 Brandeis

(WALTHAM, Mass.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team traveled to University Athletic Association (UAA) opponent Brandeis University on Saturday, October 3 for its first conference game of the season. The eighth-ranked Judges maintained home field advantage with a 4-2 victory on a stormy day.

Brandeis (9-1, 1-0) took an early 1-0 lead in the fourth minute when Zach Vieira scored off a throw-in with his left foot. In the 19th minute, Conor Lanahan capitalized on a Tartan foul and buried a free kick from 35 outs just under the cross bar.

Brandeis added to the lead in the 34th minute when Josh Ocel scored a goal to the left corner.

The Tartans cut into the deficit in the 67th minute when junior Devin Keane (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) scored an unassisted goal.

A header by Josh Berg off a cross by Ocel 10 minutes later put the Judges back up by three goals.

Freshman Zack Masciopinto (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) scored the final goal of the game in the 86th minute off an assist by senior Jordan Friedlander (Rockville, Md./The Bullis School) and Keane.

The Tartans (7-2-1, 0-1-0) return to action on Saturday, October 10 at home against New York University. The game is set to start at 1:30 p.m.
