Big Second Half Leads Tartans Past #11 Washington U.

(ST. LOUIS, Mo.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team traveled to University Athletic Association (UAA) opponent Washington University in St. Louis for a Friday night contest against the nationally ranked Bears. The Tartans (10-2-3, 2-1-2) used a big second half to come-from-behind and top the #11 Bears (10-3-3, 2-2-1), 3-1.

UAA leading scorer William Webb (Dallas, Texas/J.J. Pearce) took three shots in the first 17 minutes but two were wide and one was blocked, as the Tartans attempted four shots before the Bears could muster one.

Then in the 37th minute, the Bears put their second shot on frame and Thomas Hutchings's left-footed shot got past senior Eric Bykowsky (Columbia, S.C./Irmo) for the game's first score and the Bears held a 1-0 advantage at halftime following an evenly played first period.

Freshman Alec Lam (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) entered in goal for the Tartans late in the first half and made two early saves in the second period to keep the deficit at one for the visitors. A foul by Washington set up the equalizer as freshman Greg Bellwoar (Devon, Pa./St. Joe's Prep) scored his first career goal in the 54th minute when he headed home a free kick by junior Tristan Lockwood (Fairport, N.Y./Victor).

Lam made three more saves before freshman Anthony Gulli (Warrenville, Ill./St. Joseph) chipped a shot over Daniel Geanon for the Tartans' 2-1 lead in the 71st minute. Gulli scored his first career goal after receiving a pass from freshman Zack Masciopinto (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove).

Nine minutes later, Webb tallied his 13th goal of the season when he headed in a rebound off the crossbar following a header by Masciopinto, giving the Tartans a two-goal cushion with 11 minutes to play.

Lam made his final save two minutes after Webb's goal and the Tartans prevailed against a ranked opponent for the second time this season while Lam earned his first career victory.

The Tartans, who are currently third in the conference standings, will return to action on the road against the University of Chicago (10-4-2, 2-2-1) on Sunday, November 1 at 1:30 p.m. CT.
