Tartans Win Road Game Against Mount Union, 1-0

(ALLIANCE, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team is off to a 2-0 start after defeating the University of Mount Union, 1-0, on Saturday, September 3, on the road in Alliance, Ohio. The win marks head coach Brandon Bowman's 200th career victory.

The Tartans goal came late in the first half when sophomore Zack Masciopinto (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) converted a penalty kick.

The Cardinal and Gray came out aggressive and had two shots on goal in the first five minutes, the first by Masciopinto and the second by sophomore Greg Bellwoar (Devon, Pa./St. Joe's Prep). Masciopinto later put another two shots on frame in the 21st minute but both attempts were stopped by Mount Union's keeper, Dylan Lias.

The second half started with the Tartans again in the final third, as they picked up another two shots on frame in the first 12 minutes of the period.

Freshman goalkeeper Jack Sampiere (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) made his first stop of the match in the 63rd minute off a shot by Aaron Liezert. Another attempt by Liezert in the 71st minute was denied by Sampiere as the Tartans held the 1-0 advantage.

The Purple Raiders last attempt to tie the score came in the 86th minute when Stephen Dages hit the post with a shot.

The Tartans return home on Saturday, September 10, to face Frostburg State University at 5:30 p.m. in the second game of the CMU DoubleTree Showcase.
