Tubiana's Goal in OT Lifts Tartans Past Frostburg State

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - Freshman Cooper Tubiana's (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) goal in the last minute of overtime lifted the Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory against Frostburg State University on Saturday, September 10 in the CMU DoubleTree Showcase. The Tartans improve to 3-0 on the season while the Bobcats drop to 1-3.

With 49 seconds to play in the first overtime, a foul called against Frostburg set up a free kick from 35 yards out for the Tartans. Sophomore Philip Petrakian (Redwood City, Calif./Sacred Heart Preparatory) sent the kick to the far post where Tubiana jumped higher than everyone else and headed the pass straight to the back of the net causing the entire team to celebrate.

The two teams played for nearly 35 minutes with 10 men apiece as red cards were handed out 14 minutes apart. The Tartans played with a man advantage for those 14 minutes but managed just one scoring opportunity when a deflected header by sophomore Zack Masciopinto (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) was wide of the goal.

Tubiana nearly put the Tartans ahead in the 21st minute when he had back-to-back shot attempts stopped by Frostburg. His second attempt was a bicycle kick off his saved shot that was cleared off the post by Erik Casterline.

Frostburg's best chance to take a lead was in the 65th minute when Rodrigo Valenzula curled a free kick that hit the inside of the post but ricocheted out to the six-yard box. The free ball was then headed by Mack Naughton but his attempt was high of the goal.

Sophomore Alec Lam (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) earned his second win and first shutout of the season making three saves.

The Tartans will return to the field on Sunday, September 11 at 5:30 p.m. to face Catholic University in the final contest of the DoubleTree Showcase.
