Masciopinto Scores in Tartans' 1-0 Win at John Carroll

(UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team traveled to John Carroll University to face the Blue Streaks in non-conference action on Sunday, September 25. A first half goal for the Tartans stood as the squad won, 1-0, to move to 7-1.

In the 15th minute, the Tartans earned their second corner kick of the afternoon as sophomore Anthony Gulli (Warrenville, Ill./St. Joseph) played the ball into the goal area. Fellow sophomore Zack Masciopinto (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) received a touch from junior Jimmy Jameson (Fairfax, Va./Oakton) and scored for the fourth time this season and gave the Tartans a 1-0 lead.

Early into the second period, sophomore Philip Petrakian's (Redwood City, Calif./Sacred Heart Preparatory) shot hit the post and seconds later, a shot by freshman Jacob Moskowitz (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier Township) was saved by Blue Streak keeper Liam McIntosh.

A corner kick for John Carroll in the 69th minute resulted in a header by Justin Paalman but it was off frame.

Freshman keeper Jack Sampiere (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) earned his fourth win and third shutout for the season with the decision.

The Tartans, ranked 17th nationally, will begin University Athletic Association (UAA) play on Saturday, October 1 when Brandeis University visits Pittsburgh at 1:30 p.m.
