Three Second Half Goals Lead Tartans Past NYU

(RIVERDALE, N.Y.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team struck three times in the second half to defeat host New York University, 3-0, on Saturday, October 8 in University Athletic Association (UAA) action. The Tartans are now 9-1-1 on the year and 1-0-1 in the UAA while the Violets drop to 4-4-2 and 1-1-0.

Sophomore Zack Masciopinto (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) scored twice for the Tartans while junior Ryan Stinebaugh (Houston, Texas/Strake Jesuit College Prep) scored the third. All three goals came early in the second half and within less than four minutes.

The first goal was converted by Masciopinto with 55:50 gone by when he was first to the ball in a pack of players in front of the goal. Fourty-six seconds later, the leading scorer for the Tartans found the back of the net again when he headed in a cross by sophomore Philip Petrakian (Redwood City, Calif./Sacred Heart Preparatory).

After a shot sent wide by New York's Owen Smith, the Tartans were on the attack again. Petrakian had a shot saved by Lucas Doucette but it wasn't secured and Stinebaugh followed with his own shot that was also saved. The shot rebounded back out to Stinebaugh who finished his second attempt for his second goal of the season.

The Tartans forced Doucette to make eight saves for the match, including five in the first half before they broke through early in the second.

Sophomore Alec Lam (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) made four saves for the Tartans, including two in the last few minutes of the second half to keep the game scoreless at the break. He earned his fourth win of the season.

The Tartans will next travel to Rochester, New York, for a 7:30 p.m. match against the University of Rochester on Friday, October 14.
