Yellowjackets Top Tartans in Close UAA Contest

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team battled to a tough 3-2 defeat at the hands of the University of Rochester on Friday, October 14 in Rochester, New York. The Tartans fall to 9-2-1 on the year and 1-1-1 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) while the ninth-ranked Yellowjackets move to 8-1-2 and 1-1-1.

Sophomore Anthony Gulli (Warrenville, Ill./St. Joseph) gave the Tartans the lead in the 20th minute when his in-swinging corner kick went straight in the goal for his fourth goal of the season.

The lead stood until the second half when Rochester equalized early in the 53rd minute off a goal by Jeff Greblick. Eighty-eight seconds later, the Yellowjackets took the lead as Geoffrey Rouin scored on a breakaway.

The Tartans looked to tie the game and did so in the 77th minute when sophomore Zack Masciopinto (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) found the back of the net for the eighth time this season. Sophomore Philip Petrakian (Redwood City, Calif./Sacred Heart Preparatory) served a free kick that was deflected by Masciopinto past Patrick Conway.

The excitement for the Tartans was short lived when Rochester retook the lead less than two minutes later off a scramble in the box and a goal by Michael Cross.

Gulli had a shot saved in the 82nd minute and sophomore Alec Lam (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) made two saves in net for the Tartans in the final three minutes, as the game ended in Rochester's favor.

The Tartans will return to action on Sunday, October 16 at Emory University at 1:30 p.m.
