(REDLANDS, Calif.) - In a battle of top 25 teams, the 20th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team outlasted seventh-ranked University of Redlands on the Bulldogs' home field, 1-0, Friday, September 8. The Tartans advance to 2-1 on the season while the Bulldogs fall to 1-3.
Junior goalkeeper Alec Lam (Upper Saddle River, N.J. / Northern Highlands Regional) made three saves to earn his first shutout of the season and second victory while sophomore Elliot Cohen (Solana Beach, Calif. / Canyon Crest Academy) was the goal scorer for the Tartans.
Cohen's goal came after 17 minutes ticked off the clock when he finished a cross by junior Anthony Gulli (Warrenville, Ill. / St. Joseph .
The Tartans had three other shots stopped by Bulldog keeper John Melito within the first 24 minutes of play, while a shot by juinor Zack Masciopinto (Arlington Heights, Ill. / Buffalo Grove) hit the post in the 12th minute.
In the 30th minute, Sergio Valencia hit the post with a shot and Lam made his second save of the period 51 seconds before the end of the half.
Lam's final save of the game came in the 49th minute, as the remainder of the game witnessed four shot attempts by the Bulldogs go wide or high while the Tartans were off the mark on five opportunities.
The Tartans will remain in California for a game at Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Sunday, September 10 at 10:00 a.m. PT.
