#12 Tartans Open UAA Play with 3-1 Win Against NYU

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - Junior Zack Masciopinto (Arlington Heights, Ill. / Buffalo Grove) scored twice and the 12th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team defeated visiting New York University on Saturday, September 30 to open University Athletic Association (UAA) competition. The Tartans advance to 7-1-1 for the year while the Violets move to 5-2-1.

Masciopinto's first goal came two minutes and 54 seconds into the game. He headed in a pass by junior Anthony Gulli (Warrenville, Ill. / St. Joseph) who picked up the ball after his own shot was saved and immediately chipped the keeper and defense with a service to the far post where Masciopinto calmly headed it in for the 1-0 advantage.

Gulli was once again in the middle of the scoring action for the Tartans in the 51st minute when he put a corner kick to the near post. Junior Greg Bellwoar's (Devon, Pa. / St. Joe's Prep) near post run earned him the goal as he deflected the cross in between the keeper and the post for his second tally of the year.

New York University cut the deficit in half with a goal by Owen Smith in the 56th minute. Ricardo Mitrano found Luke Dunn in the center of the field and Dunn slipped a pass through the defense for Smith who put a right-footed shot across his body for the score.

Masciopinto put the Tartans back up by two in the 67th minute when he collected a pass around the defense by sophomore Elliot Cohen and won a 1v1 battle with the keeper with a shot just inside the post for his sixth goal of the season. Sophomore Jack Painter (Bethlehem, Pa. / Moravian Academy) headed the ball down to Cohen to start the play.

Junior Alec Lam (Upper Saddle River, N.J. / Northern Highlands Regional) won his seventh game in goal for the Tartans and made one save.

The Tartans will next host Penn State Behrend on Tuesday, October 2 at 7:00 p.m.
