#11 Tartans Dominate Play but Come Up Empty at #15 Brandeis

(WALTHAM, Mass.) - The 11th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team dominated play on the road against 15th-ranked Brandeis University but couldn't find the back of the net for the first time this season in a 2-0 loss to the Judges. The Tartans are now 8-2-1 overall and 1-1 in University Athletic Association (UAA) play, while the Judges improve to 9-2 and 2-0.

The Tartans got off the first two shots of the game with one sailing wide and one stopped by Brandeis keeper Ben Woodhouse. In the ninth minute, Brandeis earned a corner kick and Alex Walter made it count as he headed in the service from Dylan Hennessy.

The Tartans were back on the attack off the restart and watched as a header by senior Jimmy Jameson (Fairfax, Va. / Oakton) went wide.

The Judges added to their advantage in the 32nd minute after earning another corner kick. This time the goal was scored by Josh Ocel whose service got by junior Alec Lam (Upper Saddle River, N.J. / Northern Highlands Regional) in goal for the Tartans for the score.

The Tartans had three shots in less than a minute blocked by the Brandeis defense shortly after Ocel's goal.

Woodhouse was tested in goal all game long but especially in the first 10 minutes of the second half when he stopped shots by sophomores Elliot Cohen (Solana Beach, Calif. / Canyon Crest Academy) and Jack Painter (Bethlehem, Pa. / Moravian Academy) and one by junior Anthony Gulli (Warrenville, Ill. / St. Joseph).

The Tartans continued to pepper the goal between the 60th minute and 66th minute, forcing Woodhouse to make another four saves.

In the 84th minute, sophomore Cooper Tubiana (Montclair, N.J. / Montclair) hit the crossbar with a shot and then the Brandeis defense cleared a shot by junior Zack Masciopinto (Arlington Heights, Ill. / Buffalo Grove) off the line, before Woodhouse made another save off a Gulli attempt, keeping the shutout intact.

Lam made three saves in goal for the Tartans.

The Tartans will next travel to #1 University of Chicago on Friday, October 13. The game will be played at 5:30 p.m. CT.
