Tartans Shut Out WashU on the Road, 2-0

(ST. LOUIS, Mo.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team closed a three-game road trip with a 2-0 victory at Washington University in St. Louis on Sunday, October 15. The win halted a two-game skid and moved the Tartans to 9-3-1 overall and 2-2 in the University Athletic Association.

A shot by senior Ryan Stinebaugh (Houston, Texas / Strake Jesuit College Prep) three minutes and 34 seconds after the starting whistle was saved by Bryant Hales of Washington but resulted in a corner kick for the Tartans. Junior Anthony Gulli (Warrenville, Ill. / St. Joseph) took that corner kick and his service curved into the net past Hales for the first goal of the game. The tally was the third of the season for Gulli.

Washington quickly got into its offensive third and had a shot blocked by the defense and a shot go high before play went back the other way for a shot by sophomore Elliot Cohen (Solana Beach, Calif. / Canyon Crest Academy) that sailed high.

Each goalie made a save before the 15-minute mark and after two shots by WashU were blocked by the Tartans in the 21st and 24th minute, junior Zack Masciopinto (Arlington Heights, Ill. / Buffalo Grove) put a shot on goal in the 25th minute that was turned away by Hales.

Junior Alec Lam (Upper Saddle River, N.J. / Northern Highlands Regional) made a save in the 36th minute before Masciopinto was again denied by Hales in the 42nd minute.

Stinebaugh nearly put the Tartans ahead 2-0 in the 54th minute but his header was cleared off the line by a WashU defender. Just over a minute later, Hales stopped a shot by Cohen.

After Lam made his fourth and final save of the game in the 57th minute to keep the shutout going, junior Jamie Wheaton (Lexington, Mass. / Lexington) put in an insurance goal for the Tartans in the 60th minute. Wheaton connected on a strike from 30 yards out for his second goal of the year.

The win marked the sixth straight against the Bears and the fifth shutout in the six wins.

The Tartans will next host La Roche College on Wednesday, October 18 at 7:00 p.m. before returning to UAA play at home against Emory University on Friday, October 27 at 5:00 p.m.
