UAA Home Contest Ends in 1-1 Tie with Rochester

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team recorded its second tie of a University Athletic Association (UAA) home weekend when it finished 110 minutes of action with a 1-1 score against the University of Rochester on Sunday, October 29. The Tartans are now 10-3-3 overall and 2-2-2 in the UAA while the Yellowjackets are 11-2-3 and 4-1-1.

The Tartans were the first to score for the 13th time this season when senior Ryan Stinebaugh (Houston, Texas / Strake Jesuit College Prep) finished a rebound in the 32nd minute. Sophomore Cooper Tubiana (Montclair, N.J. / Montclair) fired a shot from the left side of the field with his right foot that sailed over the keeper and hit the under side of the crossbar. The ball bounced down but not over the goalline and spun away from the keeper. Stinebaugh beat the defender to the ball and finished the shot to the side net with the outside of his foot.

Rochester had two shots taken inside the 18-yard box blocked by a Tartan defender in the 17th and 25th minutes, with another shot blocked in the 34th minute.

Rochester was able to score the equalizer in the 77th minute when Alex Di Perna played a pass along the ground from the right sideline to the near post. Josh Cooley was there to receive the pass and take a shot through traffic to beat junior Alec Lam (Upper Saddle River, N.J. / Northern Highlands Regional) to his left.

In overtime, Carnegie Mellon put three shots on frame but all were right at keeper, Redd Brown, for routine stops. The first came off a free kick opportunity that junior Anthony Gulli (Warrenville, Ill. / St. Joseph) swung in from the corner that Brown punched out just 56 seconds into the period. Junior Zack Masciopinto's (Arlington Heights, Ill. / Buffalo Grove) bicycle attempt on the rebound was just over the bar and out of play.

Gulli had another attempt stopped by Brown when his left-footed attempt skipped along the ground but was smothered easily by Brown in the 92nd minute. The last opportunity by the Tartans came off the head of Masciopinto in the 99th minute when Gulli's service got behind the defense but Masciopinto was unable to get the header past Brown which kept the game tied at 1-apiece.

Rochester had two shots in the second overtime that were wide or deflected out by the defense.

Lam made one save for the Tartans and now has a record of 10-3-3 for the year.

The Tartans will conclude the regular season at Case Western Reserve University on Saturday, November 4 at 5:00 p.m.
