Spartans Rally to Down Tartans, 2-1

(CLEVELAND, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team closed the regular season on the road at Case Western Reserve University Saturday evening. Despite scoring first for the 14th time this season, the Tartans fell 2-1 to the Spartans in University Athletic Association (UAA) action. The Tartans close at 10-4-3 and 2-3-2 while the Spartans finish the year at 7-9-2 and 3-4.

Sophomore Elliot Cohen (Solana Beach, Calif. / Canyon Crest Academy) put the Tartans ahead in the 16th minute when his shot from nearly 20 yards out hit the back of the net. Senior Ryan Stinebaugh (Houston, Texas / Strake Jesuit College Prep) earned the assist after crossing the ball from the right side across the pitch.

Case Western Reserve put in the equalizer in the 76th minute off a goal from Garrett Winter from inside the 18-yard box.

Less than five minutes later, Paul Darmstadter scored off a free kick from 25 yards out to give the home team the lead in the 81st minute.

Late in the 82nd minute, junior Zack Masciopinto (Arlington Heights, Ill. / Buffalo Grove) put a shot on frame that Calvin Boyle stopped. Boyle later stopped a shot by junior Anthony Gulli (Warrenville, Ill. / St. Joseph) with two minutes and 15 seconds remaining in the game.

Gulli's shot was the last of the game and the Spartans held on for the home win.
