Tartans Take 2-1 Double Overtime Win at Denison to Open Season

(GRANVILLE, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team opened the season on the road against Denison University with a 2-1 double-overtime victory. Senior Greg Bellwoar (Devon, Pa. / St. Joe's Prep) tallied both goals with the game-winner coming with nine seconds before the conclusion of the contest.

Bellwoar first tied the game at one apiece in the 88th minute after settling a pass in the box off the foot of junior Elliot Cohen (Solana Beach, Calif. / Canyon Crest Academy). The equalizer sent the game to overtime with the Tartans holding the shot advantage at 20-8. The Tartans dominated the second overtime period with four shots on frame and two corner kicks.

The game winner for Bellwoar was scored when Denison's keeper didn't keep hold of a long service from senior Jack McCambridge (Bethlehem, Pa. / Moravian Academy).

Senior Alec Lam (Upper Saddle River, N.J. / Northern Highlands Regional) stopped three shots in the second period in a four-minute span early in the half to keep the deficit at one for the Tartans. The Cardinal and Gray would put three shots on frame before Bellwoar's goal late in the second frame.

Denison opened the scoring in the 13th minute when David Jaben scored off an assist by Matt Rush.

The victory for the Tartans marks the third season-opening win in five years under head coach Brandon Bowman.

The Tartans will next entertain 22nd-ranked Kenyon College at home on Sunday, September 2 at 2:00 p.m.
