#23 Tartans Close Home Season with 3-1 Win Against #8 Case Western Reserve

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The 23rd-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team scored three first half goals on its way to a 3-1 victory against eighth-ranked Case Western Reserve University in the season finale on Saturday, November 3. The Tartans move to 11-4-2 for the season with a 3-4 mark in University Athletic Association (UAA) play. The Spartans drop to 14-3-1 and 4-2-1.

Early in the ninth minute, senior Anthony Gulli (Warrenville, Ill. / St. Joseph) won a corner kick on the right side of the field. His service to the back post was headed down and on frame by junior Jacob Moskowitz (Wilmette, Ill. / New Trier Township). With CWRU's keeper on his line and diving to his left, the ball bounced up and was chested in the goal by junior Jack Painter (Bethlehem, Pa. / Moravian Academy) who strategically placed himself for a reboud or pass at the goalline.

A free kick from 20 yards out and center of field for the Spartans came in the late seconds of the ninth minute but senior keeper Alec Lam (Upper Saddle River, N.J. / Northern Highlands Regional) easily smothered the low shot that was deflected by another Spartan.

In the 12th minute, junior Elliot Cohen (Solana Beach, Calif. / Canyon Crest Academy) took advantage of a floating ball the CWRU defense played and volleyed a shot from the penalty arc to the left corner for his eighth goal of the season and the Tartans' 2-0 advantage.

CWRU's offense put the Tartans under pressure but Alex Besl's shot from inside the six hit the crossbar in the 14th minute and Lam challenged Brian Woo at the corner of the six-yard box, winning the battle with a save.

In the 35th minute, junior Alex Dziadosz (Boxford, Mass. / Phillips Academy Andover) made the score 3-0 with a volley on the left side of the box. Cohen placed a free kick inside the box that was headed by a Spartan defender but the ball came down inside the box where Painter struck the shot to the near post for his fourth goal of the season.

The Spartans broke up the shutout in the 43rd minute when Connor Weber sent a free kick from just outside the penalty arc to the right corner, freezing Lam in his place.

The Tartans held the Spartans off in the second half and finished with a 3-1 victory.
