(ST. LOUIS, Mo.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team faced University Athletic Association (UAA) foe Washington University in St. Louis on Friday evening in St. Louis. The Tartans fell 3-1 to the Bears and are now 6-7-1 overall and 2-3 in the UAA.
Junior Nick Isham (Lansing, Mich. / East Lansing) put in a goal in the first minute of the game when he settled a service into the box by sophomore Jason Edmunds (Libertyville, Ill. / Libertyville) and turned to fire a volley with his left foot to the right side netting for his third goal of the season and first in UAA play.
The Bears (7-6-1, 2-3) equalized in the 14th minute when Will Sproule finished off a shot assisted by Shiv Lamba. Fourteen minutes later the Bears took the lead with a goal by Nolan Wolf. Julian Gancman created the opportunity with a cross for Wolf to head past Tartan keeper, Alex Singh (Golden, Colo. / Lakewood).
Senior Jack Painter (Bethlehem, Pa. / Moravian Academy) had a scoring opportunity in the final seconds of the half but his shot was stopped by Connor Mathes in net for the Bears.
The Bears added to their lead in the 52nd minute when Sergio Rivas followed his own blocked shot with a shot into the net.
Four shots by the Tartans in the final eight minutes were all saved by Mathes, preserving the victory for the Bears.
The Tartans will next face sixth-ranked University of Chicago on Sunday, November 3 at 1:00 p.m. CT.
