Shockley Scores OT Winner for Tartans at Westminster

(NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.) - Carnegie Mellon University junior Mason Shockley (Morgantown, W.Va. / University) scored with 15 seconds to play in the first overtime period to lift the Tartans to a 4-3 road victory against Westminster College and advance to 3-0-1 for the year.

The Tartans poured on the pressure in overtime after the Titans equalized with 41 seconds to go in regulation. That pressure led to a blocked shot in the 95th minute and two more blocked shots surrounded by shots on goal in a one-minute span in the last two minutes of action. Both junior Josh Baugh (Boynton Beach, Fla. / Boca Prep) and sophomore Ethan Vertal (Herndon, Va. / Oakton) had a shot saved before the Titans were whistled for a yellow card. Shockley's goal followed when he was ready in the box after Baugh sent the free kick through the defense.

Carnegie Mellon led 2-1 after the first period with junior Kiran Sarvepalli (Fairfax, Va. / Fairfax) opening the scoring in the 35th minute on an unassisted goal. 

The Titans quickly tied the score less than three minutes later but the Tartans took the lead back with 30 seconds to go before the break when sophomore Luke Marolda (West Windsor, N.J. / The Peddie School) fed freshman Jake Slackman (Ambler, Pa. / Wissahicken) for his second goal of the season.

Baugh gave the Tartans a 3-1 advantage in the 51st minute off an assist by graduate student Jordi Long (Washington, D.C. / Montgomery Blair.

Westminster made it a game when they converted a penalty kick in the 89th minute and the aforementioned tying goal with seconds to go in regulation.

"It's great to earn a road win against a well coached Westminster team," said head coach Brandon Bowman. "We are proud of the team's resiliency and hope to use this momentum as we head into our next match."

The Tartans will stay on the road to play Washington and Jefferson College on Wednesday, September 15 with the game set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
