Tartans Equalize Late on PK by Baugh before Dropping OT Thriller to Ohio Northern

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team tied the game late in the second half on a penalty kick by junior Josh Baugh (Boynton Beach, Fla. / Boca Prep) before an overtime golden goal by the visiting Polar Bears of Ohio Northern University gave the Tartans their first loss of the year. The Tartans are now 4-1-1 for the season while Ohio Northern moves to 3-2-1.

Baugh's goal from the penalty spot with 3:32 to play was his second goal of the season. He stepped up to take the kick after senior defender Jason Edmunds (Libertyville, Ill. / Libertyville) was fouled just inside the right corner of the 18-yard box while attempting an attack to make a pass. The play came with the Tartans playing down a man after freshman Kuba Yiadom (Bowie, Md. / Charles Herbert Flowers) was given his second yellow card and sent off in the 83rd minute.

Ohio Northern's game-winning goal came off the head of Seth Gundlach with seven minutes remaining in the first 10-minute overtime period. Matt Studenic served a free kick from about 45 yards out on the right side of the field to the far post where Gundlach back peddled and beat the Tartans to the service at the back post and with his back to the goal, put a header on frame over the keeper to the far post for the score.

The rest of the scoring happened in the first half with the Polar Bears taking the lead in the 12th minute after a throw-in to the center of the box was flicked on by Gundlach with his head and to the foot of Levi King who brought the ball down and tapped it to Trevor Tabb nearby for a shot in traffic to the near post.

The Tartans equalized in the 21st minute after graduate student Jordi Long (Washington, D.C. / Montgomery Blair) was able to dribble past a defender to the goal line inside the box. He touched a diagonal pass back to Yiadom who, with his back to the goal and a defender on it, took a small touch toward the center and passed it off to sophomore William Rabon (Grand Rapids, Mich. / International Academy) who took a quick left-footed shot between the keeper and the near post for his first goal of the season.

In the 28th minute, the Polar Bears earned a corner kick which was taken by King. His low service into the box was back heeled by Jacob Westerkamp to Tanner Locke who calmly finished a shot for the 2-1 advantage.

The Tartans will next host Allegheny College (3-2) on Tuesday, September 21 at 7:30 p.m.
