Tartans Tripped at Home by #7 WashU in 3-0 Loss

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team hosted seventh-ranked Washington University in St. Louis for a University Athletic Association (UAA) contest on Friday, October 29. The Tartans fell to the Bears, 3-0, and are now 6-5-3 overall and 0-4-1 in the UAA. The Bears advanced to 10-2-1 and 3-1-1.

The Tartans got off four shots in the first 17 minutes of play before the Bears had their first offensive opportunity in the 18th minute. Both sophomore Ethan Vertal (Herndon, Va. / Oakton) and sophomore William Rabon (Grand Rapids, Mich. / International Academy) forced Matt Martin to make saves in the opening minutes before senior Ethan Kalis (Riverwoods, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) made a save in the 18th minute on a shot by Alex Smith.

WashU's Owen Culver put the visitors on the board in the 22nd minute after Shiv Lamba fed him a pass at the left corner of the 18-yard box. Culver spun on the defender and finished a shot to the far side netting for the game's first goal.

Carnegie Mellon junior Tyler Harp (Armonk, N.Y. / Byram Hills) nearly equalized in the 31st minute when he riffled a shot from almost 50 yards out the Martin had to punch over the net for the save.

The Bears added to their lead in the 39th minute when Nolan Wolf was able to finish a pass by Eugene Heger on the runwith a shot over Kalis in the left center of the goal.

Rabon had another shot attempt pushed aside by Martin in the first minute of the second half that led to a corner kick but the Tartans were unable to capitalize and the game stayed at 2-0.

Heger added to the score line in the 75th minute when he followed a rebounded shot by Culver that hit the right post.

The Tartans will next host 14th-ranked University of Chicago on Sunday, October 31 at 1:30 p.m.
