Tartans Close Year with Two First Career Goals in 2-1 Victory

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team topped Case Western Reserve University in its final game of the season at home on Sunday, November 7 by a 2-1 score. The Tartans finish the year with a 7-6-3 overall record and a 1-5-1 mark in the University Athletic Association (UAA) while the Spartans finish at 6-8-2 and 1-5-1.

The Tartans scored in the first half when freshman Jake Kavan (Greenwich, Conn. / St. Luke's School) pounced on a rebound off the post to put in his first career goal in the ninth minute. Moments before Kavan's score, junior Tyler Harp (Armonk, N.Y. / Byram Hills) fired off a shot from 25 yards out on the right side that screamed off the left post and back in play for Kavan to beat the keeper who first dove right before having to get up and dive left.

Sophomore Diederik Schlingemann (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Winchester Thurston) first career score came in the 53rd minute and goes in the books as the game winner when he headed in a corner kick served by junior Kiran Sarvepalli (Fairfax, Va. / Fairfax).

Case Western Reserve controlled the opportunities for the remainder of the game and found a goal in the 86th minute when Josh Cook finished a shot from the right side of the goal to the opposite corner off an assist from Matt Vatne.

Senior keeper Ethan Kalis (Riverwoods, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) earned the win, his fifth of the season, in his final career game.
