Tartans Win Three of Four at UAA Invitational

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team showed its depth as it opened the season with three wins at the University Athletic Association Invite hosted by the University of Rochester with Brandeis University, Case Western Reserve University, and New York University.

The 200-yard medley relay of sophomores Anton Razanav (San Diego, Calif./Westview) and Cole Um (Federal Way, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) with juniors Terrence Wong (Solon, Ohio/Solon) and Edward Sears (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River) finished second in 1:37.86.

Senior Brandon Yee (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista) brought in a first-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:56.39 as sophomore David Campbell (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) was third in 1:59.00 and freshman Adam Pinson (Gold River, Calif./Sacramento Day) was fifth in 1:59.87.

Razanav touched second in the 100-yard backstroke in 54.41 with sophomore Michael Kellman (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) touching fourth in 54.60. Freshman Steven Geier (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) was third in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:47.47 while freshman Christopher Wysocki (Rockville, Md./Winston Churchill) was fifth in 1:48.14.

Um and freshman Matthew Nielsen (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods) took two of the top three spots in the 100-yard breaststroke as Um was second in 1:01.10 and Nielsen was third in 1:02.02. They also finished two-three in the 200-yard breaststroke in times of 2:13.21 and 2:13.83.

The 500-yard freestyle was a top point earner for the Tartans as the men finished in the two through five spots with Geier leading the way in a time of 4:49.99 with Campbell coming in third in 4:51.05.

The 400-yard IM was the only victory of the day for the Tartans as Nielsen touched first in 4:15.65 ahead of Campbell who was second in 4:18.55.

Sears took second in the 100-yard freestyle in 48.24 as Razanav had another top-three finish with a third-place showing in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:58.26.

The 400-yard freestyle relay closed the meet as the Tartans were third behind a time of 3:16.54 by Sears, Geier, Yee and Wong.

Freshman Chris Ball (North Bethesda, Md./Richard Montgomery) finished eighth on the three-meter diving board with 143.45 points.

The Tartans will be home on Saturday, November 3 when they host Clarion University for an 11:00 a.m. meet.
