Tartans Begin Year at UAA Invitational

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) - Through six events at the University Athletic Association Invitational hosted by the University of Rochester, the Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team held the lead against three of their four opponents. Other teams in attendance were Brandeis University, Case Western Reserve University and New York University.

In Friday's relay events the Tartans took first in the 800-yard freestyle relay, second in the 400-yard medley relay and third in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

The 800-yard freestyle relay team of freshmen Steven Geier (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) and Matthew Nielsen (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods) with sophomores David Campbell (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) and Andrew Yee (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista) touched in 7:06.12, four seconds ahead of the next team which was Case Western Reserve. The 400-yard medley team of sophomore Anton Razanav (San Diego, Calif./Westview), juniors Austin Bohn (Annville, Pa./Annville-Cleona), Terrence Wong (Solon, Ohio/Solon) and Edward Sears (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River) finihsed in 3:35.54 while the 200-yard freestyle relay team was comprised of freshman Lucas Bruder (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette), Bohn, Wong and Sears who touched in 1:27.47.

In the two individual events for the night the Tartans picked up a second-place and fourth-place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle and a third, fifth and sixth-place finish in the 200-yard IM.

Freshman Christopher Wysocki (Rockville, Md./Winston Churchill) touched second in the 1,650-yard freestyle in 16:40.50 with Yee placing fourth in 16:48.51. In the 200-yard IM, Campbell touched third in 1:59.44 while freshman Jay Jin (Canton, Mich./Canton) was fifth in 2:00.55 and senior Brandon Yee (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista) was sixth in 2:00.63.

In diving, freshman Chris Ball (North Bethesda, Md./Richard Montgomery) tallied 176.65 points to place eighth on the one-meter board.

Competition continues on Saturday morning at the University of Rochester.
