Tartans Swim Past Clarion in Home Opener

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team defeated Division II Clarion University 202-97 in its home opening dual meet on Saturday, November 3. The men swept six events while placing first in 11 events.

The Tartans opened  and closed the meet with victories in the 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay. The medley relay team of sophomore Josh Lucheon (Knoxville, Tenn./Knoxville Catholic), sophomore Cole Um (Federal Way, Wash./Bellarmine Prep), junior Terrence Wong (Solon, Ohio / Solon) and freshman Lucas Bruder (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) finished in 1:37.22 while the freestyle relay team of Bruder, Wong, freshman Carter Sharer (Oakton, Va./Oakton High) and junior Edward Sears (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River) finished in 1:27.34.

Freshman Christopher Wysocki (Rockville, Md./Winston Churchill) led the sweep in the 1,000-yard freestyle as he finished in 9:56.82. Freshmen Martin Smith (Washington, D.C./The Bolles School) and Matthew Nielsen (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods) were behind him in 9:59.82 and 10:05.45. The 200-yard freestyle saw a Carnegie Mellon sweep as freshman Steven Geier (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) finished in a season-best 1:46.62 with sohphomore Andrew Yee (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista) taking second in 1:47.52 and sophomore David Campbell (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) finishing third in 1:47.92.

Sophomore Anton Razanav (San Diego, Calif./Westview) won the 100-yard backstroke in a season-best 53.53 while sophomore Thomas Wadolowski (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Tech) was second in 54.51. Although not finishing first, junior Austin Bohn (Annville, Pa./Annville-Cleona) knocked two seconds off his season time in the 100-yard breaststroke finishing second in 1:00.66.

Bruder took first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.75 while Sears was first in the 100-yard freestyle in 48.23.

Sophomore Michael Kellman (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) led a sweep of the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:58.40. Smith was second in 1:59.52 while freshman Jay Jin (Canton, Mich./Canton) was third in 1:59.78.

Campbell won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:47.28 ahead of Wysocki in 4:48.88 and Yee in 4:54.03. Wong then won the 100-yard butterfly in 52.49 ahead of Sharer in 53.01.

Nielsen picked up a victory in the 200-yard IM by finishing in 1:59.40 as Campbell was second in 2:00.91 and Jin third in 2:00.97.

On the one-meter diving board, freshman Christopher Ball (North Bethesda, Md./Richard Montgomery) finished fourth with 160.20 points while Ioannis Michailidis (Athens, Greece/Hellenic American) was fifth with 92.40 points. In the three-meter event, Ball finished fourth with 130.88 points.

The Tartans will be home again on Saturday, November 10 when they host Grove City College at 1:00 p.m.
