Tartan Men Tune Up for UAA Championships at Pitt

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - In a tune-up for the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships starting on February 13, the Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team went to the University of Pittsburgh to face the Panthers along with Clarion University and Grove City College. The Tartans defeated Grove City 231-50 and Clarion 190-103.

Sophomore Andrew Yee (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista) recorded a season-best time of 9:55.74 to win the 1,000-yard freestyle and earn the Tartans best finish of the day.

Freshman Adam Pinson (Gold River, Calif./Sacramento Day) finished second in the 200-yard butterfly in a season-best 1:54.62 while sophmore Michael Kellman (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) was second in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:58.67.

Both freshman Peter Podniesinski (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) and sophomore Roy Sung () recorded best times in the 200-yard breaststroke finishing second and third respectively in 2:11.20 and 2:13.06.

Junior Terrence Wong (Solon, Ohio/Solon) picked up another second-place tally for the Tartans in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 52.16 with sophomore David Campbell (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) finishing the 200-yard IM in second place in a time of 1:58.22.

Freshman Matthew Nielsen (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods) was third in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:48.20 and junior Edward Sears (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River) was fourth in the 100-yard freestyle in 48.22

Junior Wesley Kim (Bellevue, Wash./Lakeside) swam a season-best 1:46.58 in the 200-yard freestyle to lead the Tartans and finish sixth overall while sophomore Anton Razanav (San Diego, Calif./Westview) placed fifth in the 100-yard backstroke in 54.41.

Sophomore Christopher Ball (North Bethesda, Md./Richard Montgomery) competed on the 3-meter diving board and tallied 140.65 points with freshman Ioannis Michailidis (Athens, Greece/Hellenic American) tallying 98.75 points. Michailidis then earned 113.41 points on the 1-meter board with Ball earning 109.95 points.

The UAA Championships will begin on Wednesday, February 13 in Chicago, Ill., and conclude on Saturday, February 16.
