Relay Hits Provisional Time at UAA Championships

(CHICAGO, Ill.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team started action at the University Athletic Association Championships on Thursday, February 14 with 11 swimmers reaching the evening swim session. The meet is being hosted by the University of Chicago and the Tartans are currently in fourth place after the first day of competition.

The first day was highlighted by the relay teams as the 200-yard freestyle relay team placed third to earn All-UAA in 1:23.72 and the 400-yard medley relay team touched in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 3:24.47 while taking fourth place. Swimming the freestyle relay was freshman Lucas Bruder (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) and juniors Austin Bohn (Annville, Pa./Annville-Cleona), Terrence Wong (Solon, Ohio/Solon) and Edward Sears (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River) while sophomore Anton Razanav (San Diego, Calif./Westview), bohn, Wong and Sears swam the medley relay.

Sears qualified for the championship final of the 50-yard freestyle with a near school record time of 20.99, just .03 seconds off the record pace. The junior finished sixth overall in the finals with a time of 21:07.

Bruder placed fourth in the B-final of the 50-yard freestyle in 21.35 while Wong won the C-final with a time of career-best time of 21.26.

Freshmen Steven Geier (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) and Christopher Wysocki (Rockville, Md./Winston Churchill) reached the championship final of the 500-yard freestyle and finished fifth and sixth with season-best times of 4:40.29 and 4:40.87, respectively.

Sophomores Andrew Yee (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista) and David Campbell (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) competed in the B-final of the 500-yard freestyle with Yee winning the heat in 4:39.18 and Campbell finishing fourth in career best 4:42.35. Freshman Joseph Robinson (Maryville, Tenn./Maryville) was first in the C-final with a season-best time of 4:45.07.

Freshman Matthew Nielsen (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods) finished third in the B-final of the 200-yard IM in a season-best time of 1:54.87 to earn 15.5 points for the team. Fellow freshmen Philip Farr (Campbell, Calif./Bellarmine College) and Adam Pinson (Gold River, Calif./Sacramento Day) made the C-final of the 200-yard IM and finished first and fifth with season-best times of 1:55.31 and 1:56.03, respectively.

Competition continues on Friday with the 200-yard medley relay, 400-yard IM, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroe, 100-yard backstroke and 800-yard freestyle relay.
