Tartan Men Set Season Bests and Three NCAA Qualifying Times at Kenyon

(GAMBIER, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming team continued action at the Total Performance Invitational hosted by Kenyon College on Friday, December 6. Each swimmer that reached the finals set a season-best time with two swimmers reaching NCAA "B" qualifying standards.

Junior David Campbell (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) and freshman Brian Walsh (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) recorded NCAA "B" qualifying times of 1:52.59 and 1:52.85 in the 200-yard butterfly finishing sixth and eighth, respectively. Freshman Mark Smith (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Hinsdale Central) also set a season-best time in the event, recording a time of 1:55.90 winning the "C" final.

In the 200-yard freestyle, sophomore Steven Geier (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) set a season-best time of 1:42.68 in the "C" final. Sophomore Philip Farr (Campbell, Calif./Bellarmine College) knocked over four seconds off his season time in the 100-yard breaststroke finishing third in the "B" final in a time of 57:95. Sophomore Peter Podniesinski (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) also set a season-best time in the 100-yard breaststroke when he made the "C" final with a time of 59.33 in the preliminaries.

Junior Anton Razanav (San Diego, Calif./Westview) swam his best finish of the season in the 100-yard backstroke reaching the "B" final with a time of 51.74. He later swam 52.39 in the finals to finish seventh. In the same event, freshmen Evan Li (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista) and Sivan Mehta (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) set best times of 52.68 and 52.84 with sophomore Alex Dintino (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) recording a top time of 52.42.

Campbell set his second qualifying time in the 400-yard IM during the preliminaries with a time of 4:05.77. In the finals of the 400-yard IM, sophomore Matthew Nielsen (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods) recorded a season-best time and NCAA "B" qualifying time of 4:07.72 in the "C" final.

Senior Eddie Sears (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River) recording a time .08 off his own school record in the 50-yard freestyle, qualifying for the finals in a time of 20.98. He placed fourth in the "B" final with a time of 21.02. Sophomores Carter Sharer (Oakton, Va./Oakton) and Lucas Bruder (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) also set season-best times in the 50-yard freestyle with times of 21.36 and 21.55 for the day.

Both the 200-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard medley relay set season-best times for the day. The freestyle relay team of Sharer, Bruder, Dintino and Sears recorded a time of 1:24.87, finishing ninth, while the medley relay team of Razanav, Farr, Walsh and Sears finished ninth in 3:25.98.

Competition concludes on Saturday with preliminaries at 9:30 a.m. and finals at 5:30 p.m. The Tartans are currently fifth in the standings and ahead of Division I Davidson College and Grove City College.
