Tartans Close Home Season Hosting Denison

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team hosted Denison University in its last home meet of the season on Saturday, January 24. The Big Red outlasted the Tartans 174-95.

Sophomore Brian Walsh (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) turned in the Tartans lone first-place finish of the afternoon when he touched the wall with a time of 1:52.50 in the 200-yard butterfly.  Senior David Campbell (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) placed third in the event with a time of 1:55.62.

Walsh also competed in the 100-yard butterfly were he took second with a time of 51.65 while fellow sophomore Sivan Mehta (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) finished .14 seconds back in fourth with a time of 51.79.

Sophomore Brian Jay (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) finished second in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:10.52, as junior Matthew Nielsen (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods) was less than a second behind finishing third in 2:11.20.  In the 100-yard breaststroke, freshman Matthew Chu (Warren, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep) took third in 58.58 and Jay touched in 58-84 for a fourth-place finish.

In the 200-yard freestyle, junior Steven Geier (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) was second with a time of 1:43.42.  

Jay turned in a third-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle followed by freshman Kevin Steinhouse (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs School) and Mehta in fourth and fifth.  Jay touched in 21.63 while Steinhouse and Mehta touched in 21.80 and 21.96, respectively.

Freshman Michael DiBacco (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia) turned in a third-place showing in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:57.68.

The team will returns to the pool next week as they swim at the University of Pittsburgh at 11:30 a.m.
