Two Earn All-UAA Honors on Final Night of UAA Championships

(ATLANTA, Ga.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team finished fifth at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships after competition concluded Saturday, February 14.

Freshman Alex Glidden (Peabody, Mass./St. John's Prep) placed eighth overall in the 1,650-yard freestyle, provisonally qualifying for the NCAA Championships with a time of 16:08.85. Freshman Josh Taekman (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) was 12th in the event with a season-best time of 16:18.79 while sophomore Dustin Ferzacca (Beverly, Mass./Manchester Essex) placed 14th in 16:26.83.

Freshman Michael DiBacco (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia) placed third in the 200-yard backstroke, earning All-UAA honors. His time of 1:50.57 is a provisonal qualifying time. Junior Steven Geier (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) placed fourth in the event with a provisional qualifying time of 1:52.77.

In the 100-yard freestyle, freshman Kevin Steinhouse (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs School) placed 15th with a time of 46.84. The 200-yard breaststroke saw sophomore Brian Jay (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) provisionally qualify for the NCAA meet with a time of 2:06.16, placing 12th. Junior Matthew Nielsen (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods) placed 15th in the 200-yard breaststroke, touching in 2:07.18.

Sophomore Brian Walsh (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) completed his outstanding meet performance with a second-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly. His time of 1:50.66 is a provisional qualifying time as he earned All-UAA honors.

The 400-yard freestyle relay closed the meet, as sophomore Sivan Mehta (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale), Geier, Walsh and Steinhouse touched in 3:05.48 to place sixth.
