Tartans Earn Two More Dual Victories

(GROVE CITY, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team defeated Grove City College, 232-66, and the University of Rochester, 193-100, on Saturday, November 7 at a double-dual meet hosted by Grove City. The Tartans are now 5-0 in dual meets this season.

The Tartans started the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay behind swims from junior Brian Walsh (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier), sophomore Matthew Chu (Warren, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep), junior Sivan Mehta (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) and senior Joseph Robinson (Maryville, Tenn./Maryville) who touched in 1:35.94.

Freshman Jack Lance (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) placed second in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:16.10, swimming the event for the first time this season. He later finished second in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:59.43 as freshman Mitchell Riek (Sunland, Calif./Bishop Alemany) touched first in 4:43.91. Riek also who won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:45.08 with senior Steven Geier (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) behind him in a season-best 1:47.44.

The Chu brothers led a sweep in the 100-yard breaststroke as freshman Winston touched first in 58.95 with Matthew second in 59.68 and junior Brian Jay (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) third in 59.74. Winston later won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:13.54 while leading another sweep as senior Peter Podniesinski (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) was second in a season-best 2:15.66 and Jay was third in 2:15.92.

Walsh swam the 200-yard butterfly for the first time this season and won in 1:55.91 while sophomore Edward Healy (Lincroft, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) was second in 2:00.50. Walsh later touched second in the 100-yard freestyle in 48.87 before leading a sweep of the 100-yard butterfly in 52.14.

Mehta picked up a second-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke in two minutes flat with sophomore Benjamin Pierce (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) touching third in a season-best time of 2:02.35.

Riek closed the individual events with his third victory of the day and sixth of the season when he touched first in the 400-yard IM in 4:16.02. Senior Matthew Nielsen (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods) was second in the event with a time of 4:18.09.

Freshman Gabe Bamforth (Cambridge, Mass./CRLS) won both the 1-meter diving and 3-meter diving events with season-best scores of 244.58 and 232.88, respectively.

The team will next compete on Friday, November 13 and Saturday, November 14 when the divers host an invitational starting Friday at 4:00 p.m. and the swimmers host Allegheny College and Washington & Lee University on Saturday at 10:00 a.m.
