Riek Wins Three as Tartans Earn Two More Dual Wins

(NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team competed in its first meet of the semester and defeated Westminster College, 161-136, and SUNY Geneseo, 170.50-128.50, at Westminster on Saturday, January 16. The Tartans improve to 9-0 in dual meets for the season.

Freshman Mitchell Riek (Sunland, Calif./Bishop Alemany) led the Tartans in the 1,000-yard freestyle, touching first in 10:08.39. He later won the 200-yard butterfly in 1:53.34 and the 200-yard IM in 1:56.68. Fellow freshman Jack Lance (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) was second in the long-distance freestyle 10:15.82.

Sophomore Matthew Chu (Warren, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep) was second in the 100-yard breaststroke in 58.88 with senior Peter Podniesinski (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) touching third in 59.56. Junior Brian Jay (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) was the leader for the Tartans in the 50-yard freestyle when he finished second in 22.03. Jay also placed second in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:09.03, while Podniesinski was third in 2:13.49.

Freshman Jack Dangremond (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) picked up a second-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle in 48.35 after he touched third in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.20.

The 500-yard freestyle saw sophomore Josh Taekman (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) finish second in 4:51.71, senior Steven Geier (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) third in 4:52.89 and junior Dustin Ferzacca (Beverly, Mass./Manchester Essex) fourth in 4:54.62.

A third-place finish came in the 200-yard freestyle for senior Matthew Nielsen (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods) when he touched in 1:46.97. Junior Sivan Mehta (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) also picked up a third-place finish when he completed the 100-yard butterfly in 52.91.

Freshman diver Gabriel Bamforth (Cambridge, Mass./CRLS) won the 1-meter event with a season-best 295.85 points after six dives while he placed fourth on the 3-meter board with a season-best 270.45 points.

The Tartans will return to competition on Saturday, January 23 at Denison University at 1:00 p.m.
