Buckheit Hits Provisional Mark at TPSC Invitational

(GAMBIER, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team competed at the opening night of the Kenyon College Total Performance Sports Camp Invitational on Thursday, December 1. After the first night of competition which consisted of three events, the Tartans are fourth out of six teams with 162 points with the University of Pennsylvania leading with 282 points.

Freshman Jacob Buckheit (Naples, Fla./Community School of Naples) was the first Tartan to finish the 1,650-yard freestyle. He touched 12th in a time of 16:07.72 to register a "B" cut time for the NCAA Championships. Buckheit was followed by fellow freshman Daniel Li (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) in 14th place in 16:17.89 and sophomore Jack Lance (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) in 16th place in 16:26.25. Additionally, freshman Mark Gorelik (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista) was just behind Lance in 17th place in 16:27.44.

The 800-yard freestyle relay of sophomore Mitchell Riek (Sunland, Calif./Bishop Alemany) and freshmen Rip Lyster (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast), Sam Hawke (Malvern, Pa./Episcopal Academy), and Richard Deng (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor Plainsboro South) touched the wall in 10th place in a time of 6:49.31.

Deng, junior Matthew Chu (Warren, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep), senior Sivan Mehta (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale), and senior Brian Jay (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) finished 10th in the 200-yard medley relay after touching the wall in 1:32.07.

Tomorrow's action will begin at 9:30 a.m. with preliminaries and finals starting again at 5:30 p.m.
