Chu Breaks Own Record in Breaststroke at TPSC Invitational; Bamforth Does the Same in Diving

(GAMBIER, Ohio) - Junior Matthew Chu (Warren, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep) broke his own school record in the 100-yard breaststroke while sophomore Gabe Bamforth (Cambridge, Mass./CRLS) reset his own records in diving Friday afternoon as the Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team took to the water for the second day of the Kenyon College Total Performance Sports Camp Invitational.

The Tartans remain in fourth place with 637.5 points and are ahead of Division I Davidson College and Division III DePauw University. The University of Pennsylvania remains in the lead with 1,517 points.

Chu's record time of 55.52 in the preliminaries gave him placement in the top final of the 100-yard breaststroke. He finished the final in seventh place, touching in 55.67. He also provisionally qualifies for the NCAA Championships with his afternoon swim.

Sophomore Mitchell Riek (Sunland, Calif./Bishop Alemany) finished the 200-yard butterfly in sixth place Friday evening after touching the wall in 1:50.00. His preliminary swim was a hair faster in 1:49.53 and was a season-best along with a "B" cut for the NCAA Championships. Freshman Rip Lyster (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast) placed ninth overall in the same event with his best time coming in the preliminaries at 1:50.41 which also met the "B" cut standard.

The best finish in the 200-yard freestyle came from freshman Sam Hawke (Malvern, Pa./Episcopal Academy). Hawke's time of 1:41.38 put him 14th overall. Hawke later swam the 50-yard freestyle and placed 22nd with a season-best time of 21.42. Senior Sivan Mehta (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) turned in a 15th-place performance in the 100-yard backstroke with a finals time of 52.10.

Lyster achieved his second "B" cut time of the day in the 400-yard IM. While swimming the event for the first time this season, his preliminary time of 3:59.98 put him in the top final where he finished 10th in 4:04.36.

Mehta, freshman Richard Deng (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor Plainsboro South), Hawke, and senior Brian Jay (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) finished the 200-yard freestyle relay in 7th-place in a time of 1:24.33 while junior Michael DiBacco (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia), Chu, Mehta, and Hawke closed the meet with a fifth-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay which was just off the pace of a "B" cut in 3:22.92.

Bamforth broke his own school record when he earned 547.50 points on the 3-meter diving board to win the event. His previous record was 534.90 which he set at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships last year. He also dove in the preliminaries of the 1-meter event and broke another of his records with a score of 527.15, surpassing his previous record of 507.45 set at Kenyon last year.

Competition concludes Saturday with preliminaries at 9:30 a.m. and finals at 5:30 p.m.
