Three Sweeps Lead Tartans Past Westminster and SUNY Geneseo

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team hosted Westminster College and SUNY Geneseo on Saturday, January 14 after returning from its annual training trip in Miami, Florida, earlier in the week. The Tartans topped Westminster, 213-77, and Geneseo, 157-140.

Freshman Richard Deng (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor Plainsboro South), sophomore Winston Chu (Warren, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep), senior Sivan Mehta (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale), and freshman Sam Hawke (Malvern, Pa./Episcopal Academy) led off the meet with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:35.56.

Three events came and went before Chu won the next event for the Tartans. The sophomore touched first in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 56.86.

After Chu's victory, sophomore Mitchell Riek (Sunland, Calif./Bishop Alemany) led a sweep of the 200-yard butterfly with a winning time of 1:52.41. Freshman Jack Hoagland (Colts Neck, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) was second in 1:56.00 with freshman Alex Rastelli (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) third in 1:57.69.

Another sweep for the Tartans came in the 200-yard breaststroke when Chu was first in 2:09.32, senior Brian Jay (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) second in 2:09.64, and freshman Connor Clayton (Simpsonville, S.C./Mauldin) third in 2:10.65.

Riek won his second event of the day when he completed the 500-yard freestyle in 4:42.88 with freshman Jacob Buckheit (Naples, Fla./Community School of Naples) behind him in second in 4:44.06. Another Tartan victory came in the 100-yard butterfly when freshman Ryan Fitzpatrick (Montgomery, N.J./Montgomery) touched in 52.20.

Freshman Rip Lyster (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast) led the third team sweep of the afternoon when he touched first in the 400-yard IM in 4:09.30. Riek was second in 4:09.82 with sophomore Jack Lance (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) third in 4:10.31.

The Tartans closed the meet with a first-place showing in the 200-yard freestyle relay with Jay, Deng, Hawke, and Fitzpatrick touching in 1:25.40.

The Tartans will return to competition on Saturday, January 21 at Denison University at 1:00 p.m.
