Tartans Tune-Up for UAAs at Western PA Invite

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team traveled to the University of Pittsburgh for the Western Pennsylvania Invite in a tune-up for the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships to be held February 8-11.

Sophomore Gabe Bamforth (Cambridge, Mass./CRLS) finished fourth on the 1-meter board and fifth on the 3-meter board after recording scores of 259.20 and 242.75, respectively.

Freshman Daniel Li (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) touched third in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:55.13 with senior Sivan Mehta (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) placing third in the 100-yard backstroke in 53.36.

Sophomore Winston Chu (Warren, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep) also earned a third-place finish for the Tartans when he finished the 100-yard breaststroke in 57.08. Sophomore Mitchell Riek (Sunland, Calif./Bishop Alemany) continued to perform well in the 200-yard butterfly as he touched second in 1:52.24 before finishing third in the 200-yard IM in 1:56.35.

Another third-place finish for the Tartans came from senior Brian Jay (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) in the 50-yard freestyle. Jay finished the race in 21.75 seconds before freshman Sam Hawke (Malvern, Pa./Episcopal Academy) was third in the 100-yard freestyle in 47.08.

Freshman Connor Clayton (Simpsonville, S.C./Mauldin) was the first Tartan to finish the 200-yard breaststroke when he touched third in 2:09.30.

The 200-yard freestyle relay finished the meet with a second-place showing behind the swims of Jay, freshman Richard Deng (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor Plainsboro South), Hawke and freshman Ryan Fitzpatrick (Montgomery, N.J./Montgomery), who completed the race in 1:26.71.

The UAA Championships begin Wednesday, February 8 and will take place at the University of Chicago.
