800 Free Relay Sets School Record on Second Day of UAA Championships

CHICAGO, Ill.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team remain in fifth place at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships hosted by the University of Chicago. Emory University leads the 8-team field with Washington University in St. Louis sitting second.

Sophomore Gabe Bamforth (Cambridge, Mass./CRLS) had another All-UAA showing on the diving board with a third-place finish on the 3-meter board with 502.70 points.

The 200-yard medley relay of junior Michael DiBacco (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia), sophomore Winston Chu (Warren, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep), senior Sivan Mehta (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) and senior Brian Jay (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) touched fifth in 1:32.96.

Freshman Rip Lyster (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast) swam an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 3:59.47 in the 400-yard IM to place fourth while freshman Connor Clayton (Simpsonville, S.C./Mauldin) touched eighth in 4:03.57, also recording a provisional qualifying time. Joining Lyster and Clayton with qualifying marks was sophomore Jack Lance (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) in the B-final when he touched second in 4:03.46.

Freshman Sam Hawke (Malvern, Pa./Episcopal Academy) placed fourth in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:40.75 with sophomore Mitchell Riek (Sunland, Calif./Bishop Alemany) touching sixth in 1:40.89.

Two Tartans swam in the final of the 100-yard breaststroke with Chu touching fifth in a provisional qualifying time of 55.96 while Jay touched seventh in a qualifying time of 56.42.

Mehta was the top Tartan in the 100-yard butterfly as he touched 15th overall in 51.39.

The 800-yard freestyle relay closed the evening with a fifth-place showing, as Lyster, Hawke, freshman Jacob Buckheit (Naples, Fla./Community School of Naples) and Riek touched in a school record and provisional qualifying time of 6:46.28.

The final night of competition will be Saturday, February 11 starting at 6:30 p.m. CT.
