Tartans Win Second Dual Meet, Top Clarion 218-83

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team hosted Division II Clarion University on Saturday, November 4 and won the dual meet 218-83 after winning 12 events and sweeping two.

The Tartans opened the meet with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay with freshman Justin Britton (Falls Church, Va. / George Mason), junior Winston Chu (Warren, N.J. / Saint Peter's Prep), freshman Max Gonzalez (Allison Park, Pa. / North Allegheny), and sophomore Richard Deng (West Windsor, N.J. / West Windsor Plainsboro South) finishing the relay in 1:35.02.

Sophomore Sam Hawke (Malvern, Pa. / Episcopal Academy) was victorious in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:46.90 while Britton followed with a win in the 100-yard backstroke in 52.97. Hawke won his second event of the day when he touched first in the 100-yard freestyle in 48.09.

Chu won the 100-yard breaststroke in 57.02 and the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:10.31. Senior Matthew Chu (Warren, N.J. / Saint Peter's Prep) was second in the 100-yard breastroke in 58.88.

Gonzalez led a sweep of the 200-yard butterfly when he finished in 2:01.97. Freshman Emmanuel Eppinger (Pittsburgh, PA / Winchester Thurston) was second in 2:03.01 with freshman Bradley Chen (San Jose, Calif. / Lynbrook) touching third in 2:05.08.

Deng won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.51 with sophomore Ryan Fitzpatrick (Montgomery, N.J. / Montgomery) finishing second in 22.15.

In diving, junior Gabe Bamforth (Cambridge, Mass. / CRLS) led the Tartans with a first-place showing on the 3-meter with 300.00 points and a second-place showing on the 1-meter with 275.48 points.

The 500-yard freestyle was won by freshman Andrew Joyner (Holly Springs, N.C. / Tar Heel Springs Academy) in 4:52.05 with sophomore Rip Lyster (Naples, Fla. / Gulf Coast) touching second in 4:53.49. Freshman Thomas Delauro (Bridgewater, N.J. / Bridgewater-Raritan) knocked more than two seconds off his previous top time with  a third-place finish in 4:55.95.

Freshman Tyler Duic (Lutz, Fla. / Tampa Preparatory) recorded a new season best when he won the 100-yard butterfly in 54.00 and the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Britton, Deng, freshman Lukas Marxer (San Diego, Calif. / Canyon Crest Academy), and Hawke closed the meet with a top finish in 1:26.39.

The Tartans will next compete on Saturday, November 11 at home against Grove City College and Washington and Lee University. The meet is set to begin at 11:30 a.m.
