Relay Records Fall at UAA Championships

(ATLANTA, Ga.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team opened the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships on Thursday with two school records and currently sit fifth in the team standings.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of freshman Justin Britton (Falls Church, Va. / George Mason), freshman Max Gonzalez (Allison Park, Pa. / North Allegheny), sophomore Richard Deng (West Windsor, N.J. / West Windsor Plainsboro South), and sophomore Sam Hawke (Malvern, Pa. / Episcopal Academy) finished in a new school-record time of 1:23.23 and fifth overall in the event.

In the 500-yard freestyle, sophomore Daniel Li (Charlotte, N.C. / Providence) placed 13th after touching in 4:40.55.

Sophomore Rip Lyster (Naples, Fla. / Gulf Coast) led three Tartans in the second final of the 200-yard IM when he finished third in the heat and 11th overall in 1:52.93. Gonzalez was just behind him in 1:53.04 with junior Jack Lance (Lititz, Pa. / Warwick) touching 13th in 1:53.41.

Deng led the team in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing 13th overall in 21.26 while junior diver Gabe Bamforth (Cambridge, Mass. / CRLS) placed second on the 3-meter board with a score of 544.30. Also making the top eight on the 3-meter board was senior DeShawn Green (Newport News, Va. / Warwick) who scored a career-best 412.30 to place eight.

The second and final school record of the night came in the 400-yard medley relay after Britton, junior Winston Chu (Warren, N.J. / Saint Peter's Prep), Gonzalez, and Hawke finished fifth in 3:21.42.

The championshps continue on Friday with preliminaries in the morning at the Woodruff P.E. Center on the campus of Emory University.
