Four Swim in Championship Finals on Second Day of UAA Championships

(ATLANTA, Ga.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team had four swim in the championship finals on the second day of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships hosted by Emory University. The Tartans are currently in fifth place with final competition set for Saturday.

Sophomore Rip Lyster (Naples, Fla. / Gulf Coast) finished sixth overall in the 400-yard IM after touching the wall in 4:01.50 during finals. His time provisionally qualifies him for the NCAA Championships as he recorded an even better time of 4:00.56 in the preliminaries. Sophomore Connor Clayton (Simpsonville, S.C. / Mauldin) won the second heat of the 400-yard IM when he finished the race in a career-best time of 4:03.09.

In the 200-yard freestyle, freshman Max Gonzalez (Allison Park, Pa. / North Allegheny) finished 11th overall in 1:40.84 while sophomore Sam Hawke (Malvern, Pa. / Episcopal Academy) was 14th in 1:42.92.

Senior Matthew Chu (Warren, N.J. / Saint Peter's Prep) and junior Winston Chu (Warren, N.J. / Saint Peter's Prep) made the championship final of the 100-yard breaststroke with Winston finishing sixth in 56.20 and Matthew seventh in 56.42.

The Tartans were led by freshman Justin Britton (Falls Church, Va. / George Mason) in the 100-yard backstroke when he touched seventh in a time of 50.78.

The final day of the championships is Saturday with preliminaries starting at 10 a.m. with finals set to begin at 5:30 p.m.
