Bamforth and Chu to Compete at NCAA Championships

(INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.) – Juniors Gabe Bamforth (Cambridge, Mass. / CRLS) and Winston Chu (Warren, N.J. / Saint Peter's Prep) will represent the Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team in competition at the 2018 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. The championships will be hosted by the Indiana Sports Corporation and Franklin College in Indianapolis, Indiana, on March 21-24.

Bamforth earned his third trip to the national meet after finishing third at the NCAA Region 4 Diving Championships this past weekend. He'll once again compete in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events with the chance to earn his third All-America award. Last year, Bamforth finished eighth on the 1-meter board while in 2016 he finished 16th on the 3-meter board.

Chu will be competing nationally for the first time and will race in the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke. Chu was invited to the meet in the 100-yard breaststroke after he achieved a career-best time of 55.64 at the Kenyon College Fast Chance Meet. His time is currently 18th in the nation. The junior will also swim the 200-yard breaststroke.

The Tartans finished 19th nationally last year behind the performances of one swimmer and one diver. This marks the ninth time in 11 years at Carnegie Mellon that head coach Matthew Kinney has taken at least one male athlete to the NCAA meet.
