Tartans Set Three School Records on First Night of Kenyon Total Performance Invitational

(GAMBIER, Ohio) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team started competition at the Kenyon College Total Performance Invitational on Thursday setting three school records. Four NCAA B cuts were also met with seven individual swimmers reaching the top 10 during the finals.

Sophomore Justin Britton (Falls Church, Va. / George Mason), freshman Jonathan Hua (New Providence, N.J. / Delbarton), sophomore Max Gonzalez (Allison Park, Pa. / North Allegheny) and junior Sam Hawke (Malvern, Pa. / Episcopal Academy) kicked off the evening session with a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle. Their time of 1:22.49 set a new school record and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships.

Britton had the top individual finish of the day for the Tartans when he touched third in the 50-yard freestyle in a school record time of 20.67. His time also provisionally qualifies him for the NCAA Championships. Hua led four Tartans in the second final of the 50-yard freestyle, touching first in the heat in 20.98.

Hawke achieved a B cut in the 200-yard IM, placing fifth in 1:51.82 with senior Jack Lance (Lititz, Pa. / Warwick) touching sixth in 1:52.71. Freshman Daniel Ng (Buffalo Grove, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) was also in the finals heat of the 200-yard IM, placing ninth in 1:54.10 after a preliminary time of 1:53.94.

Freshman Richard Dauksher (Fort Collins, Colo. / Fossil Ridge) placed seventh in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:34.35, less than a second off the B cut time for the NCAA Championships. Senior Mitchell Riek (Sunland, Calif. / Bishop Alemany) placed eighth in 4:38.77 while sophomore Andrew Joyner (Holly Springs, N.C. / Tar Heel Springs Academy) was ninth in 4:39.00. Both Riek and Joyner topped 4:38.00 in the preliminaries.

The 400-yard medley relay closed the night with a school record performance. Britton, senior Winston Chu (Warren, N.J. / Saint Peter's Prep), Gonzalez and Hawke touched third in 3:19.75 and also provisionally qualified for the NCAA meet.

Competition continues on Friday with preliminaries of the 400-yard IM, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard backstroke kicking off at 10:30 a.m. Relay events will be the 200-yard medley relay and 800-yard freestyle relay and will take place in the evening session along with finals of 1-meter diving.
