Tartans Win FIU Sprint Invite

(MIAMI, Fla.) - Four days into the winter training trip for the Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming team the Tartans competed at the Florida International University Sprint Invite against a mix of teams from Division I, II, and III. The Tartans finished first out of 11 teams with 548 points.

HIghlights of the meet include the following finishes:

Sophomore Justin Britton (Falls Church, Va. / George Mason), junior Sam Hawke (Malvern, Pa. / Episcopal Academy), and senior Winston Chu (Warren, N.J. / Saint Peter's Prep) each won twice.

  • Britton the 50-yard backstroke in 24.69 and the 100-yard freestyle in 48.12.
  • Hawke the 100-yard IM in 54.57 and the 100-yard butterfly in 52.35.
  • Chu the 100-yard breaststroke in 59.56 and the 50-yard breaststroke in 27.20.

The Tartans recorded the top five finishes in the 200-yard freestyle with sophomore Max Gonzalez (Allison Park, Pa. / North Allegheny) winning the event in 1:45.21.

Freshman Sean Lannigan (Holden, Mass. / Wachusett Regional) was first in the 100-yard backstroke in 54.70.

Freshman Richard Dauksher (Fort Collins, Colo. / Fossil Ridge) won the 400-yard freestyle in 3:44.29 and was second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:45.39.

Senior Mitchell Riek (Sunland, Calif. / Bishop Alemany) was second in the 100-yard butterfly in 52.66.

Freshman Jonathan Hua (New Providence, N.J. / Delbarton) was second in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.65.

Junior Ryan Fitzpatrick (Montgomery, N.J. / Montgomery) placed fourth in the 50-yard butterfly in 24.05.

Freshman Nathan Shao (Bellevue, Wash. / Bellevue) was fourth in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.30.

Once the Tartans return to campus for the second semester of classes they'll return to competition with a meet at Denison University on Saturday, January 19 at 1:00 p.m.
