Justin Britton Wins Elite 90™ Award for NCAA Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Justin Britton (Falls Church, Va./George Mason), a sophomore at Carnegie Mellon University, is the recipient of the Elite 90 award for the 2019 NCAA Division III Men's Swimming and Diving Championship.

Britton, majoring in information systems, currently carries a 4.0 GPA. Britton was presented with the award during the swimming and diving banquet on Tuesday evening in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The Elite 90, an award founded by the NCAA, recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. The Elite 90 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's championships.

Eligible student-athletes are sophomores or above who have participated in their sport for at least two years with their school. They must be an active member of the team, traveling and a designated member of the squad size at the championship. All ties are broken by the number of credits completed.

Britton is the first Tartan swimmer to receive the award and third Tartan, as Katie Cecil of women's tennis won the award twice in 2013 and 2014.

This marks Britton's first appearance at the NCAA Championship where he'll swim the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events along with four relays. The sophomore set the school record in the 50-, 100-, and 200-yard backstroke earlier this season along with the 200-yard freestyle relay, 400-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard medley relay. Britton is a two-time University Athletic Association (UAA) Champion, winning both backstroke events this year.
